Brian Bannon
Commissioner, Chicago Public Library
Before joining CPL, Brian Bannon was the Chief Information Officer at the San Francisco Public Library, where he managed digital strategy, information technology, public media and online services. Prior to that role, Bannon was Chief of Branches of SFPL, managing the staff of San Francisco’s 27 neighborhood libraries and the design process of the $200 million Branch Library Improvement Program. In this role, Bannon led the design and construction teams for 24 new/renovated libraries which have won local and national attention for innovation and sustainable design. Before San Francisco, Bannon lived in Seattle, where he worked at the Seattle Public Library (SPL) in a variety of leadership roles including public technology, instruction, and library management. Prior to SPL, Bannon was with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he held positions within the U.S. Library Program and the Native American Access to Technology Program. Bannon has a BA from Pacific Lutheran University and a MLIS from the University of Washington.
John Butler
Associate University Librarian for Data & Technology, University of Minnesota
John Butler is Associate University Librarian for Information Technology at the University of Minnesota. Previously, he directed the libraries’ Digital Library Development Lab, which produces systems, architecture, integrations, and tools for the online research library. Prior to that, he directed the libraries’ Distance Learning Development Project, a four-year program funded by the Bush Foundation to implement a comprehensive array of library services to distance and distributed learners. Earlier in his career he served as Head of the University of Minnesota’s Science and Engineering Library and also held positions at the McKinney Engineering Library at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his master’s of library and information science. John is a frequent presenter at regional and national conferences and has authored several articles and chapters related to technology and information services.
Emily Gore
DPLA Director for Content
Emily Gore is the Director for Content of the Digital Public Library of America. In this role, she oversees the Digital Hubs Pilot Project and coordinates content workflows for DPLA. Gore came to the DPLA after working for 12 years in digital library and technology development in academic and state libraries. Most recently, she served as the Associate Dean for Digital Scholarship and Technology at Florida State University Libraries. Gore’s work has largely focused on building digital collection collaborations among cultural heritage institutions. She managed the former statewide digital library in North Carolina, NC ECHO, and co-directed the South Carolina Digital Library.
Susan Hildreth
Director of the Institute for Museum and Library Services
On January 19, 2011, President Obama appointed Susan Hildreth to be director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The US Senate confirmed the nomination to her new post by unanimous consent on December 22, 2010. Hildreth is the former city librarian of Seattle, where she managed the Seattle Public Library, which includes the world-renowned Central Library, 26 new and expanded branches, and a Mobile Services division. Hildreth was president of the Public Library Association and served on its board of directors. She was an elected member of the council that governs the American Library Association. She was a longtime member of the California Library Association and served as its president and treasurer.
Martin Kalfatovic
Associate Director, Smithsonian Institution Libraries
Current projects include work on metadata, standards, intellectual property issues. As the Deputy Director for the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), he assists with the global coordination of the BHL project working with BHL nodes in China, Brazil, Australia, the European Union, and Egypt. He is a frequent contributor of articles and reviews and the author of three books. He can be found on Twitter at @udcmrk and maintains a blog at UDC793.blogspot.com. He has an inordinate fondness for dodos.

James A. Leach
Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities
James A. Leach is Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Prior to being nominated by President Obama for the post, Leach was a Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and Interim Director of the Institute of Politics and Lecturer at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Leach’s brief stint in academia was preceded by 30 years of service as a representative in Congress where he chaired the Banking and Financial Services Committee, the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs, and the Congressional- Executive Commission on China. Leach attended Princeton, the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins, and the London School of Economics.
Jeffrey Licht
Partner, Pod Consulting
Jeffrey Licht is a partner at Pod Consulting, a technology strategy, system engineering, and interaction design firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is responsible for Pod’s content management practice, working with universities and non-profits in the Boston area. Prior to joining Pod he worked at Sapient Corporation, leading development of online applications for retail, travel, banking, and media clients.
Maura Marx
Director of the DPLA Secretariat; Berkman Center for Internet & Society Fellow
Maura Marx is a Fellow at the Berkman Center and has been responsible for driving the agenda and community-building efforts of the DPLA Secretariat since its inception. Marx was Executive Director of the Open Knowledge Commons, an organization funded by the Sloan Foundation that helped lay the foundation for DPLA through advocacy and demonstration projects. Previously, she was responsible for starting the Boston Public Library’s Digital Services Program. Before coming to work in libraries, she lived and worked in Europe for organizations including the Guggenheim Museum (Salzburg), Warner Bros. Austria, and Amadeus, Inc. in strategic planning, technology planning, development and public relations.
Mary Molinaro
Associate Dean for Library Technologies at the University of Kentucky Libraries
Mary Molinaro is currently the Associate Dean for Library Technologies at the University of Kentucky Libraries. Her research interests include digital preservation, access and delivery of digital information, and development of library infrastructure in developing nations. Ms. Molinaro’s master’s degree in library science and undergraduate art degree are both from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Ms. Molinaro has done extensive library consulting for academic libraries in Ecuador and in Vietnam. In 2002 she was named a Senior Specialist by the Fulbright Commission and completed a Fulbright assignment in Tunisia. She was a member of the 2003 class of the Frye Leadership Institute and in 2007 was designated a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Kentucky.
John Palfrey
Head of School at Phillips Academy, Andover
John Palfrey is the Head of School at Phillips Academy, Andover. He also serves as a Trustee of the Knight Foundation and the chair of the Steering Committee of the Digital Public Library of America. Palfrey’s research and teaching focus on new media and learning. He has written extensively on Internet law, intellectual property, and the potential of new technologies to strengthen democracies locally and around the world, and is the author or co-author of several books. John served previously as the Henry N. Ess III Professor of Law and Vice Dean for Library and Information Resources at Harvard Law School. He is a director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, where he was executive director from 2002-2008. Palfrey graduated from Harvard College, the University of Cambridge, and Harvard Law School. He was a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar to the University of Cambridge and received the U.S. EPA Gold Medal (highest national award).
Doron Weber
Vice President, Programs at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Doron Weber oversees efforts in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, Universal Access to Knowledge and International Science Cooperation. A sponsor of books, television documentaries and radio shows, Mr. Weber created a nationwide theater and film program. In Digital Information Technology, Mr. Weber supports the Digital Public Library of America, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, the Library of Congress and the Espresso Book Machine. A new program in International Science Cooperation focuses on connecting scientists and engineers in conflict regions. Weber was educated at Brown University, the Sorbonne and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has authored several books, most recently a memoir, Immortal Bird.
